You Have a New iPad What Next?

The iPad was a very popular gift this year.  One of the more frequent questions I get now is “I just got an iPad, what apps should I get?”

I want to say there are thousands of free apps so search, install, try and delete. Just go play and have fun.  I think people have trouble understanding that apps on the iPad are different then an application on a computer.  There are not as many applications for computers there were only a few applications that dominate market share.  Apps however are numerous this truly allows for individuals to find and use a what suits there needs.

In a school most computers have the same image, my guess is you would not find 2 ipads with identical apps. So where do you start to explore apps if you are not ready for the overwhelming choice of the the App store?

I would suggest AppStart it contains a user friendly guide to the iPad with app suggestions.  Apple has comprised a getting started list for apps for education as well as suggestions for initial exploration for productivity. Go explore have fun and find what works for you.

  1. I have been searching blogs on education, specifically using technology in the classroom, and I came across yours. I am intrigued because of your last two blogs, which have been about iPads. I believe that iPads and other tablets are the next “thing” to hit the common classroom. My only thought is, how are iPads in a classroom going to help students to learn? Are they any more effective than a computer lab? Aside from having the convenience of the internet in your hands, are they worht it? Most students now can get the internet on their phones, which most schools prohibit students from using.

As a teacher, how is an iPad helping my students to learn? Again, aside from making my daily routine more efficient, in what way are the students learning better from my use of this technology. Is it helping me teach different things, or just teach the same things differently?

  2. Hi Beth, I have really enjoyed reading your blog and looking at your pictures. I am an Elementary Ed. student, and I taking EDM310, a technology course. I am certainly one of those people who have become overwhelmed with technology and apps, as well. I feel like I just waited too long to get on board with technology. Really, I was just afraid of messing up or doing something wrong. I do not currently own an iPad because I did not feel like I would understand how to use it well enough to benefit me. While reading your blog post, a light bulb came on. I have been too afraid of just exploring freely. Not having that child like ability to just explore and see what happens, is what is holding me back the most. I have really grown and overcame some unwarranted fears towards technology this spring. It is interesting to me that I only expected to learn about the iPad and apps from your blog post, yet I learned something about myself, as well.
